| Trump officials offer cities tens of millions for Memphis-style police surges – with conditions August 10, 2026. USA The Trump administration is offering grants of tens of millions of dollars to cities across the US to create more Memphis-style enforcement surges – on the condition that they abandon progressive ideologies on policing. The US Department of Justice says it will announce up to four finalist cities that will split $300m in grant funding under a federal “Model Cities” policing initiative (MCI) next month, setting the stage for some of the largest federal policing grants ever awarded to individual US cities. In exchange for the funding, cities are required to comply with federal immigration enforcement requests, enact conservative policies on anti-homelessness rules, and potentially repay millions of dollars in the event of a surge in violent crime or “civil unrest”, according to a grant document. Angers mounts in US over vast network of car license plate cams August 8, 2026. USA In only a few years, the surveillance start-up Flock has installed more than 100,000 license plate reader cameras across the United States. But a grassroots movement upset over privacy concerns is fighting back — even going so far as systematically vandalizing the equipment. Flock cameras are installed by police departments, homeowners’ associations and businesses, ostensibly to catch criminals in the act. Data is uploaded to Flock’s cloud and can be shared with subscribers. But opponents are outraged at what they say is a dangerous tool that can be used to infringe on American privacy and civil liberties. Is ICE using too much force? New poll shows big public opinion shift August 9, 2026. USA Months of immigration enforcement controversies have taken their toll, and new polling shows it could be a problem for Republicans heading into the midterms. About 8 in 10 independent voters say U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has used too much force in its nationwide operations, according to a poll from YouGov, which sampled 1,000 voters in late July. It’s a striking increase from 2025, when polls showed independents more divided on the issue. As NYC braces for immigration surge, city sees increased enforcement August 6, 2026. New York A surge of federal immigration enforcement officers to the nation’s largest city is spurring dramatic confrontations across several immigrant enclaves. In New York City, masked federal agents have pepper-sprayed a 72-year-old woman near a park and agents brought a detainee with a prior tuberculosis diagnosis to be evaluated at a hospital emergency room. |

Collette Flanagan founded MAPB in 2013 after her son, Clinton Allen, an unarmed young Black man in custody, was shot to death by a Dallas police officer.
